Mixed Medias - Behind the the scenes

Mixed media provides endless artistic possibilities.

I started my exploration of mixed media intuitively. I began to paint a picture of leaves on fiberboard and decided to let the board ‘double’ as a palette. The painting sat in a corner for a couple of months until I rediscovered it and decided to give it a white Formica ‘mat’.

I sensed something was still missing, so I added a paintbrush and the title “PICTURE”. That gave me a construction illustrating a painting-in-progress in which each viewer had to look closely to see what was real or unfinished.

After that, I experimented with re-making a pencil sketch of my feet in the bath, drawing it on a Formica board, and attaching a bath plug. I discovered I had made a bath picture that didn’t show the bath, but created the believable illusion of bathing.

I have been looking for illusions created by mixed media ever since.
